For the past few years I have been hitting the Rideau on opening day but I have decided this year to participate in the Ottawa Valley Musky Club’s Icebreaker tournament. This year’s tournament is on June 4 at takes place on the Madawaska River outside of Arnprior.
I have fished there in the past with moderate success, by biggest musky being 45” long. It would be nice to start the season off with a fish like that. The sad thing is that it is still 3 months away yet I already find myself thinking about techniques and places to fish.
A few years ago I was there early in the season and caught a healthy 35” musky right along shore under a tree trunk while casting a small spinnerbait. I think that finding the warmer water with baitfish will be key but you never know early in the season.
I am planning on bringing a couple of friends to help me out so hopefully they will be able to make it and we’ll be able to boat something!
